In March 2014, the Ohio law allowing adoptees that were adopted between 1-1-1964 and 9-18-1996 was changed. The adoption files of adoptees in this timeframe, which were previously sealed, have been made available to adoptees and their lineal descendants (defined as children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the adoptee).
The adoption file includes the unamended birth certificate for the adoptee (which was previously unavailable), along with additional paperwork from the state concerning the adoption. These files often (but not always) contain identifying information about the adoptee that was previously unavailable unless searching through an organization like Reunite of Ohio.
Biological siblings of the adoptee and birth parents of the adoptee also have expanded rights under the new law. Please click on the link below to get the most current information on the process to request the adoption file.
It should be noted that the law concerning those persons adopted prior to January 1st, 1964 and after September 18, 1996 has not changed. The link below will provide information for all adoptees, regardless of adoption date.
